Fountains

Fountains, especially the decorative sort, are fantastic architectural features which are often located in parks, squares and plazas, in front of public buildings and, of course, in private residences. These water fountains can be found in a myriad of designs, shapes and sizes and the water that is displayed from them can be as little as tiny trickles, to a huge geyser like jet of water. Another good thing about fountains is the fact that once filled initially with water, they do not need replenishing, meaning they do not waste water and are also ideal for small animals, birds and insects to grab a drink when water is in short supply.

For the most part, fountains are created to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye, as well as for producing a relaxing, almost therapeutic effect due to the gurgling water sounds. Having a fountain installed at home, whether for outdoor or indoor use, is not as expensive nowadays as it used to be in years gone by. Just imagine sitting at home or in the garden listening to the wonderful sound of gurgling, bubbling water and watching the water jets or sprays in different patterns. You can even create your own effects simply by purchasing a different container.

The fountain could be installed in the garden, home or office and offers a chance to impress family and friends with not only a very elegant structure, but something that will also let them experience the same feeling of relaxation as you.

Going back in history you will find that water fountains were originally created for more practical purposes such as drinking and irrigation of small areas. It was the ancient Romans though that started utilising fountains as a decorative instead of practical structure in their courtyards and gardens.

Today, things have progressed a bit in design and structure and although you can still find fountains made from stone, more modern varieties tend to use concrete, fibreglass or polyresin. They can consist of basins which are set atop each other so the water may cascade down into the base of the fountain, single large basins and basins fitted onto walls creating the so-called wall fountains - the designs are limitless. Many fountains also include intricate designs and works of art like sculptures, capturing the times when the Romans first used them as decorative pieces.

Indoor, outdoor or wall fountain, each has an almost limitless number of designs and each could have just as many uses. Small inside fountains could be used on a table in the living room or on a bedside table in a bedroom, helping you relax at night. Outside they could be placed close to the patio or veranda. One thing is for sure though; wherever they are placed they afford the perfect relaxation techniques that you could use to help rest the body and mind. And don't forget that the soothing sound of running water adds tranquillity and a certain amount of beauty to absolutely any environment.
